The Majestic Theatre
Main Street Bashaw
|
|
Built in 1915, the Majestic Theatre is a ?boomtown? style structure, believed to be the last remaining example of its kind in western Canada. Not a ?grand theatre? by any means, the Majestic is, nonetheless, of historical and architectural significance, fits into the overall history of theatre development in Alberta and serves an indicator of Alberta?s settlement history.
The exterior of the Majestic has been restored to the way the fa?ade looked c1915-1930. The interior of the theatre is in the final stage of restoration and interior design will reflect a similar time period. Probably built by Eugene Bashaw, founder of the Town of Bashaw, the building was first used to show traveling ?magic lantern? shows but by 1921 the ?Majestic Theatre? was showing the popular new silent films. The first silent picture show seen in the Majestic was Paramount Art Craft film starring Ethel Claymore entitled ?More Deadly Than the Male?, accompanied by a Max Sennett comedy film. The very next week, the ?Last of the Mohicans? was entrancing audiences.
The Majestic Theatre will soon become a working theatre museum. Visit the website at www.townofbashaw.com or contact Friends of the Majestic Theater Society. Anyone wishing to become a member is more than welcome.
